5 Steps to Prepare Your Home for Fall

by Scott Zielinski

The fall season brings about change: the cold weather returns, the leaves develop their deep hues and we get out our winter clothes for the coming frost or cold. No matter where you live, it’s important to prepare your house for the winter season, which will save you time, money, and energy!

Everyone has their own checklist depending on the type of home and area of the world they live in. Here are some of the top five ways you can prepare your home for winter that everyone can find some value in.

1. Switch your closet from Summer mode to Winter mode.

Most of us only think about changing our wardrobe around for the colder months, trading sleeveless shirts for hoodies and sweaters, but what about linens, bedding, and other household fabrics? Put aside some time to get those blackout curtains out, which can help with your energy bill, and trade those summer-colored kitchen towels for earth tones and festive-themed decor to bring in the mood of the holidays.

Take it a step further by cleaning retired linens and storing them away in their own dedicated box so you always know where they are.

2. Do a deep clean!

When we say deep clean, we mean to show some TLC to every vent, wall, drain, nook, and cranny of your home. For some, that may seem daunting and in that case, hiring a service might be a worthy investment.

If you find cleaning therapeutic, or if you have some help, then this might be something you can take on without the extra cost. Take time to dust, clean, and sanitize shades, windows, windowsills, frames, and vents. Studies show that doing so can eliminate most germs from contact, reduce allergic reactions and achieve clearer air. Sanitize and wash your doors, handles, surfaces, and anything else that your family touches.

Deeping cleaning can also entail washing sink drains, dishwashers, and garbage disposals with a vinegar/bleach/baking soda mixture, scrubbing and mopping floors, and vacuuming furniture and carpets for example.

3. Prepping Doors and Windows

Weatherizing every window and door in your home can not only increase the level of comfort but save hundreds on your energy bill as well. There are many affordable options for DIY insulating doors and windows like foam tape, plastic film kits for windows, and under-the-door flaps and draft stoppers.

4. Get your fireplace ready!

A great way to save money on heat is to actually utilize your fireplace if you have one. Before lighting it up for that cozy feel, make sure to do seasonal and regular maintenance to ensure safety and efficiency. Working with a professional to perform a chimney sweep, replacing batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, and inspecting the fireplace gaskets are all items that should be on your prep checklist.

5. Take account of your storage.

The change of wardrobe, and the deep clean we mentioned in step two, might afford an opportunity to take account of your storage space and see if anything can be donated, sold, or discarded. One good tip is to label your boxes and storage bags and consider listing the main items inside the box for easier access.
