How To Decide: Real or Fake Christmas Tree

by Scott Zielinski

We are gearing up for a highly anticipated holiday season! Creating shopping lists and dinner menus, bringing down the decorations, and of course, putting up the Christmas tree! Which brings us to a very important question: Real vs. Fake?

Whether you are sticking true to family traditions, or have to choose an articificial tree for allergy reasons, sometimes a real Christmas tree isn't an option. However, for those considering the debate, we are here to help you weigh the pros and cons of both sides.

Why You Should Choose a Real Christmas Tree

The authentic smell. Plain and simple. Nothing can beat the authentic aroma of a fresh Christmas tree around the holidays.

Real trees are better for the environment. Nearly 10 million artificial trees are purchased each season and shipped from China, resulting in an increase in carbon emissions and resources. Real trees, even cut, help support forests.

For storage reasons, a real Christmas tree is always easier. If your home lacks an attic or basement space, finding somewhere to store an extra, large box can be tricky.

Supporting local farms and garden centers is a small but powerful reason to buy a real tree every year. In South Jersey alone, there are dozens of family-owned farms and businesses that prepare all year for this holiday season.

Real trees are more unique and diverse, giving you more options to choose from. Between a Fraser, Balsam, Spruce, and Pine, you have various color options, branch strengths, and scents. Typically, artificial trees come in a handful of standard sizes and types.

Why You Should Choose an Artificial Christmas Tree

If you suffer from certain allergies, you may simply not have an option to purchase a real tree for inside your home. In that case, artificial trees are a great option!

Although the upfront cost of an artificial tree is more than a real one, it is a great investment as you can reuse it every year. If you plan on using your artificial tree for more than five Christmas', it may be worth looking into.

Artificial trees require much less maintenance than a real tree. You won't need to water or sweep up needles for your artificial tree.

Looking for something unique and fun? Artificial trees give you more color options than a real tree. Choose from pink, white, or even rainbow. Get creative!

Last but absolutely not least, most artificial trees are fire-resistant. If stringing lights on your tree makes you a bit nervous, you can ease your worry and leave the lights on overnight with an artificial Christmas tree.

Whichever tree you choose this year, we wish you a happy and safe holiday season!
